Case study
Slough Borough Council
In 2007 Kunku worked with Richard Hawkes, Organisational Development Manager on Slough BC's "Smartmove – Bringing About Change Programme" to support managers in the implementation of new ways of working aligned to the Council’s accommodation strategy.
The accommodation strategy sought to bring about considerable change in the way that Slough BC did business and the environments in which staff worked. The "Smartmove Programme" was designed to support managers to manage the impact of the change for themselves and their teams.
Programme objectives were to:
Introduce new models, new ways of thinking and working
Enhance leadership skills
Support managers through a period of disruption and change
Improve internal and external service delivery
Provide a platform for review and redesign through the introduction of technology and business process re-engineering.
At the organisational level managers went through a three-day learning programme to involve them in transformational learning. Richard recognised that managers needed to lead teams through transition and re-anchor themselves in their new environments and managers met in action learning sets to address team issues. The programme also recognised that adaptive work calls for individual leadership and all managers were able to draw on up to four personal coaching sessions.
Kunku worked with Richard to design the programme and collaborated with the consultants who delivered the organisational and team elements. She provided and supported the coaches for the programme. She coached two cohorts of 12 managers each and worked with them to align their personal needs with the changing organisation.
